This will be a community-based event taking place at the Castle's Down YMCA with three main goals:

  • Freedom of Expression Survey

To introduce ourselves, we are Dr. Dan Wilson from MacEwan University and Dr. Martin Mrazik from the University of Alberta. Most professors, campus administrators, and students want an open environment where all members of the academic community can express their ideas honestly. In recent years there are concerns that students and professors have been self-censoring their views in the classroom. We are conducting a study to learn more about students’ perspectives on being able to express their ideas in their classes and in the campus environment.

Participants: We are seeking post-secondary students from post-secondary institutions across Canada to participate in the study.

Study Procedures: The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes. There is no personally identifying information collected and surveys will be anonymous. Please click on the link below. By clicking on the link, you are providing your consent to participate.

Incentives: Students who complete the study will have access to a link at the conclusion of the study. This link will ask for your email to be sent to the investigators. This is optional. There will be 10 randomly drawn prizes of $500 at the conclusion of the study (April, 2024). Participants will be notified within 30 days. You will be asked for your email at the conclusion of the survey.

Questions or Concerns: If you have any questions or concerns regarding how this study is being conducted, you may contact the Research Ethics Office at 780-492-2615. This office has no affiliation with the study investigators. The study ID is: Pro0012270

  • Conversation Cafe

Our primary goal, as a youth team, is to engage with ABC youth from diverse religious affiliations, socio-economic classes, and experiences to get a clear view of the activities/events that they are interested in. To achieve this, we will conduct surveys, interviews, and conversation cafes (focus groups) across various communities in Edmonton over the next month. The insights gathered from these interactions will be used to inform a digital guide that will provide information on the needs and interests of Black youth in Edmonton.

The digital guide we are creating will serve as a roadmap for community leaders, making it easier for them to tailor community spaces and events to meet the interests and needs of ABC youth. Moreover, this project provides a platform for ABC youth to engage in community discussions that will directly impact the spaces they enter.

  • As I Am: A digital storytelling project on racism.

This project is all about shining a light on the experiences of racism in Edmonton and how that impacts individuals, youth in general, and professionals in the workplace. To participate, youth need to be between the ages of 15 and 24 and part of a BIPOC or equity-deserving community.

For the completion of the project, each participant could receive up to $450.

The program consists of two parts. In the first part, participants will create any type of digital art, visual art, stories, poetry, photography, or any other visual/creative medium on the impact of, experiences of, or resistance to racism in their community.

The second part of the project is interviewing a BIPOC professional about the impact of, experiences of, or resistance to racism in their profession. These stories, artworks, poetry, and interviews will be presented to the community in a shared forum to bring awareness to, conversation about, and changes to our community for the better.

To learn more, interested participants can attend an upcoming Youth Engagement Session. The Session will provide more information, so by signing up, participants are not committing to the entirety of the project but to learning more about it!

The link to register is included on the poster via the QR code, but you can also share this link with any interested participants: https://www.jotform.com/form/232965095262260

  • Wade Institute of Technology

We are losing Black talent in engineering, and the recent affirmative action ruling dealt a further blow to that already dwindling pipeline. A fast-moving dynamic profession needs equally agile educational preparation.

At The Wade Institute of Technology (WIT), we have a solution. Who are we? A new Palo Alto-based engineering college focused on mitigating the acute underrepresentation of African Americans and students of African descent in STEM professions through scholarships and unique educational programs.

We’re seeking applicants for our Master’s in Engineering Management, a 24-month, tuition-free program for Black students with undergraduate degrees in a STEM discipline OR in the liberal arts. This unique program provides background in core engineering areas as well as leadership principles for those who want broad-based management and leadership positions rather than technologist roles. Program and application details can be found here.

  • The Elemental Runway Project

This year's theme is Elemental Elegance: A Sustainable Fashion Odyssey.

This theme draws inspiration from the classical elements—earth, water, air, and fire—and intertwines them with the principles of sustainable fashion.

Inspired by the Queen's University Vogue Charity Fashion Show, the show aims to champion environmental and social sustainability within the fashion industry. We will spotlight fashion collections made from sustainable, upcycled, or recycled materials, complemented by interactive displays and art installations that highlight sustainability facts and the broader impacts of fashion. Integrating natural elements like live plants and trees into the runway design, we seek to emphasize the connection between fashion and nature, and the importance of sustainable decision-making. Our goal is to educate attendees on environmental challenges and promote sustainable fashion practices.

Prizes for the most creative and/or upcycled materials.

    When/Where is it?

Wednesday April 3rd . 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the David R. Percy Student Lounge - Faculty of Law. Appetizers and refreshments will be served.

    How to Participate:

Confirm you will participate by responding to this email (cahayden@ualberta.ca), plan to create between 5 or more fashion pieces. (Attached is an inspiration board—feel free to unleash your creativity without any constraints). Your designs can be as simple or as grand as you want them to be.

    Student Groups Craft Night Budget:

Additionally, regarding the sustainability-themed craft night for student groups, we have allocated a budget of $200 for each group for the first three groups to sign up. This budget is intended to cover materials, which should be affordably priced given our sustainability focus, encouraging the use of reused materials. Part of the funds can also go towards food and beverages for your group's craft night, with the stipulation that no alcohol purchases are allowed. We ask that all groups provide receipts for their purchases.
